Step beyond the classroom and into the heart of the Zambian wilderness on this immersive Wilde Tracks Conservation Mission, where wildlife veterinary medicine, conservation and hands-on field learning come together.
Designed for veterinary students, veterinarians, veterinary nurses and veterinary technicians, this 10-day mission offers a rare opportunity to learn alongside experienced wildlife veterinarians and conservation professionals while seeing what it really takes to work with African wildlife in the field.
Your days will take you directly into wildlife operations, with opportunities to observe and participate in chemical immobilisation, darting, wildlife capture and animal handling, alongside practical sessions, clinical case discussions and specialist lectures. You will explore wildlife pharmacology, capture techniques, physical restraint, capture-related risks, infectious and zoonotic diseases, conservation ethics, wildlife legislation and helicopter operations.
Based on a remote 20,000-hectare reserve in southern Zambia, your classroom is the African bush itself. Wildlife surrounds the reserve, with opportunities to encounter southern white rhino, buffalo, zebra, sable, roan, puku, black lechwe, wildebeest and other iconic African species. Depending on conservation priorities and field conditions, activities may also include game drives, walking safaris, wildlife tracking and conservation patrols.
And the learning doesn't stop when the fieldwork does. Take time to discover the extraordinary landscapes of the Zambezi, visit Victoria Falls and experience Zambia beyond the reserve, creating a mission that combines professional development, conservation and adventure.
Expect early mornings, muddy boots, unforgettable wildlife encounters and the unpredictability that comes with working in the field. Every day can bring something different, making this an opportunity to challenge yourself, expand your practical knowledge and gain a genuine insight into the world of wildlife veterinary medicine.
This is more than learning about wildlife medicine - it is an opportunity to step into the field, contribute to conservation and experience the wild from a completely different perspective.
Zambia is a country of incredible wildlife, diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, from vast savannahs and mighty rivers to dramatic waterfalls and remote wilderness areas. Home to iconic species including elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, hippos, giraffes, zebras and hundreds of bird species, Zambia is one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations. With a warm climate, rich cultural traditions and some of the continent’s most untouched wilderness, Zambia offers a unique combination of nature, conservation, culture and adventure. From world-renowned wildlife areas and pioneering conservation projects to the spectacular Victoria Falls and the mighty Zambezi River, there is something remarkable around every corner.
Immerse yourself in the wider world of wildlife conservation and discover what it takes to protect Africa’s wildlife in the field. Beyond the veterinary component of the mission, you’ll have opportunities to explore the practical conservation work taking place across the reserve and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing wildlife, habitats and the teams working to protect them.
From tracking animals across the bush and monitoring wildlife to joining conservation patrols and supporting wildlife operations, activities offer a chance to see conservation beyond the textbook. You’ll learn how field teams combine wildlife management, veterinary care, monitoring, anti-poaching efforts and habitat protection to support healthy and sustainable wildlife populations.
Activities may include:
Wildlife capture, translocation and chemical immobilisation operations
Rhino conservation and dehorning missions
Wildlife tracking and species identification
Anti-poaching patrols and conservation fieldwork
Game drives and wildlife monitoring
Walking safaris and tracking wildlife on foot
Learning about wildlife management and conservation strategies
Supporting field teams during veterinary and conservation operations
Exploring the challenges of protecting wildlife and their habitats in Zambia
Learning about conservation legislation, ethics and sustainable wildlife management
Activities are guided by current conservation priorities, wildlife movements and field conditions, so every mission can look a little different. You may find yourself following tracks through the bush one day and alongside a wildlife team during an active conservation operation the next.
Halfway through your mission, take a break from the reserve and head to Livingstone for an unforgettable day exploring one of Zambia’s most spectacular regions. Just a short journey from the reserve, this excursion combines the incredible natural beauty of Victoria Falls with time to discover the local culture and landscapes surrounding the mighty Zambezi River.
Stand at the edge of Victoria Falls and experience the power of the Zambezi as millions of litres of water cascade into the gorge below. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke That Thunders”, the falls are one of Africa’s most iconic natural landmarks and a highlight of any visit to Zambia.
The day may also include time to explore local markets, discover handmade crafts and enjoy lunch beside the Zambezi. As the afternoon winds down, set out on a sunset boat cruise along the river, where you may spot hippos, crocodiles, elephants, antelope and an incredible variety of birdlife.
It’s the perfect opportunity to step away from the fieldwork, take in the scale and beauty of the Zambian landscape and experience another side of this extraordinary part of Africa.

Wilde Tracks is a conservation organisation with a different approach to funding wildlife protection: our conservation work is funded through travel.
We work alongside wildlife veterinarians, conservation organisations, reserves, researchers and local communities around the world, helping fund vital work including veterinary interventions, wildlife monitoring and tracking, anti-poaching initiatives, research, habitat protection and community-led conservation.
Rather than relying on donations or traditional fundraising, the people who travel with Wilde Tracks help make this work possible. The money generated through our trips directly contributes to the conservation projects our guests may be part of, while also supporting important work continuing behind the scenes.
